The Aurora Museum Shanghai is showing Bettina Pousttchi's large-scale work World Time Clock in a solo exhibition during the Shanghai Art Season.
The World Time Clock series consists of 24 large-format photographs of public clocks around the globe, each showing the time at 1:55. The places of origin of the clocks depicted correspond to the 24 time zones of the globe. The work thus addresses an aspect of transnationality and globalisation: the simultaneity of time despite spatial distance.
Bettina Pousttchi began this series in 2008 and travelled around the globe to photograph public clocks in cities all over the world. Travelling to different places is an essential part of the conceptual artwork. To realise this project, the artist visited numerous cities around the world, including Anchorage, Auckland, Sydney, Shanghai, Vladivostok, Seoul, Rio de Janeiro, Tashkent, New Delhi and Yangon. Apart from a few individual journeys, the artist travelled around the globe twice and visited eight different places within 27 days.
The black and white of the photographs harmonises perfectly with Tadao Ando's unique architectural language. World Time Clock was first exhibited as a circular installation at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C. in 2016-17. The series was shown a second time in 2019-20 at the Berlinische Galerie, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Berlin.
World Time Clock at the Aurora Museum Shanghai will be the first presentation of this important work in China and Asia.
