Press release

The relationships between my drawings, photographs, and sculptural works are extremely close and complex at the same time. The photographs are often like sketches, or they record something that might suddenly appear in my work only years later in some cases. Wolfgang Laib

Wolfgang Laib’s photographs provide a view into the center of his thinking as an artist. The viewer encounters in them an interpretive aid for the oeuvre as a whole. Again and again, the photographs offer poetic, encoded insights into his world of ideas and clues to the travels he has made to countries in the Near and Far East since 1965.

A powerful semantic charge is an integral part of Wolfgang Laib’s photographs. They cannot be isolated, neither in the form of a deliberate photographic concept on the part of the artist nor in the viewer’s reflection on them. By means of his photographs, Wolfgang Laib enables direct comparisons of the minimalist formal idiom of his sculpture to the architectural forms of East Asian cultures. Their concentration on recurring motifs expresses a search for the essential and elemental.

Wolfgang Laib’s photographs have been shown at the Folkwang Museum Essen, the Kunstmuseum Bonn, and the Haus der Kunst in Munich, among other places.

MoMA in New York is planning a large Wolfgang Laib exhibition for spring 2012.

For further information on the artist or for images of the works in the exhibition, please do not hesitate to contact the gallery at any time.
