Press release

Buchmann Galerie is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition dedicated to the British artist Tony Cragg (*1949, Liverpool), considered one of the most important sculptors of our time.

Both in Agra and Lugano galleries will be exhibited the new sculptures by Tony Cragg made of wood, stone, marble and bronze. The diversity of materials, each one with its own distinctive features, allows the artist to give its works an always different and particular character. These sculptures, which reflect the style of Tony Cragg's latest artistic production, want to examine the principles of different realms of life such as nature, technology, civilization and art in terms of their fundamental elements and structures. The research of the artist is addressed to a new language, which can translate in sculpture the experience of physical and emotional world. The result is made of dynamic sculptures, which challenge statics and its laws, but at the same time cause disorientation in the perception of the artwork itself. The various points of view and the different aspects of each sculpture give the impression of a continual movement and change. Tony Cragg's sculptures can be described as visual appropriations of forms and structures from the complex world we live in. The artist once said “[...] I’m not somebody who makes figures, as in the traditional sense. Obviously, the human figure is one of the most interesting things around us and I’m interested in that, but my work is very often about the structures that lay beyond, behind and underneath the things we see.”[1]. Despite being extremely precise, accurate and serious in his work and in the way he approaches to reality, Cragg sometimes adds in his works some ludic and ironic references, typical of the British humor.

His artistic career, which begun in the '70s, is a constant evolution. Today more than ever before, his works show the complexity and accuracy of his making art, as they are full of charm and beauty and therefore unique.

In 1978, Tony Cragg started teaching at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, becoming Director of the Academy from 2009 to 2013. In 2007 he was awarded the Praemium Imperiale for Sculpture in Japan. 2009 he received an Honorary Doctor of the Royal College of Art in London. In 2013-2014 he was awarded the Chaire de Création Artistique of the Collège de France, Paris.

Milan Cathedral is now hosting a masterly sculpture made of white marble, entitled Paradosso (Paradox) and inspired to the famous Madonnina statue. In occasion of the upcoming EXPO 2015, on the terrace of the Cathedral, some other sculptures by Tony Cragg are on show.

In addition to the exhibition in 2012 at Villa Ciani in Lugano, he recently exhibited at the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, the Nasher Scuplture Center in Dallas, the  CAFA Museum in Beijing, the  Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku and the Musée d’Art Moderne in St. Étienne.

In Wuppertal Tony Cragg founded the Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden, to show both his works as well as sculptures by other internationally renowned artists. Buchmann Galerie is one of his main representative galleries in Switzerland since 1983 and in Germany.

Comunicato stampa
