Since February 2020, Jason Martin has dedicated himself to working on the preparation and development of this new series of paintings. This group of works marks an important shift in the artist’s practice: He returns to the paintbrush, but for the first time uses a versatile colour palette in different hues and tones to create paintings of immense depth and space. Looking at the polychrome paintings one journeys into something that begins on the surface, but which then pulls you in deeper and deeper, opening into an unfathomable space beyond. One reaches a surprising, almost figurative reality inside the painting, much like looking into a blazing fire, swirling water or ice. The lateral movement of the brushwork supports the multi-layered play of colours in the more translucent paintings, while others retain an opaqueness.

Anjos II, 2019
Mixed media on aluminium
88 (h) x 74 x 10 cm
34¾ (h) x 29¼ x 4 in

The dark watery blue color of Anjos II changes in intensity. It is darker when looked at from one side and is lighter with a slight fluorescence from the other side. It is a beautiful and important painterly detail that intensifies the impact of the color, volume and space and gives the painting a strong physical presence.

86½ x 196¾ in

Vertigo is an outstanding example for Jason Martin’s brushed oil paintings. The smooth, gleaming monochrome oil paint, combed onto an aluminium ground in thin layers and gentle waves, traces the painter’s expressive gesture and creates an impression of mobility reminiscent of drapery, landscape or a geological formation. Like a curtain or a veil, the optical impression is located between the viewer and the extremely tense tactile quality of the picture surface. This dialectic of movement and stillness, which is so characteristic of painting, permeates all of Jason Martin’s work. The light models the brushwork, making it appear almost sculptural.

Untitled II, 2018
Mixed media and gold leaf on aluminium
76 x 57 cm
30 x 22½ in

This work has an all over texture and is gold-plated with gold leaf.  Jason Martin is referencing the use of gold in the history of painting when used for precious works or details in paintings.

Jason Martin
Xahil, 2015
Mixed media on aluminium (Quinacridone magenta)
46 (h) x 204 x 20 cm
18 (h) x 80¼ x 7¾ in

There are very few paintings Jason Martin has made in such a long stretched landscape format.  The work has a rich impasto, also around the edges, which makes it very three-dimensional.
