Giuseppe Penone

The Buchmann Galerie is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Berlin by Giuseppe Penone
(b. 1947). The exhibition is conceived in collaboration with the artist.

The artist will be present during the opening reception.

Giuseppe Penone, one of the most important representatives of Arte Povera, has been developing a sensitive, expressive, and completely individual visual idiom since the late 1960s.

One central theme in Giuseppe Penone’s oeuvre is exploring the relationship between human beings and nature. His ability to empathize with nature dates from his youth: he grew up in Garessio, a rural town south of Turin. For Penone, nature represents memory, the omnipresent representation of processes of growth and change that shape every individual’s life. His art is often concerned with revealing and consciously recognizing in sculptural form natural processes that would otherwise go unnoticed or remain invisible.

Around a large drawing which fills one wall of the gallery, Giuseppe Penone groups selected works, such as the bronze sculpture Proiezione or one of his unusual tree trunks cast in bronze.

He has recently had large solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (2009), MAMbo: Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Bologna (2008), the Museum Kurhaus Kleve (2006–7), the Fundación la Caixa, Barcelona (2004–5) and the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2004). Penone has participated in documenta (1987, 1982, 1972) and the Venice Biennale (2007, 1995, 1986, 1978).
