Martin Disler Un trittico
Friday 20 May at 17.00, Buchmann Lugano’s city space will present the triptych Ohne Titel, by artist Martin Disler (1949, Seewen-1996, Geneva).
To this day, Disler's artistic production defies categorisation and preserves its autonomy. In his paintings, the creative impulse abruptly sets itself free in the shape of decisive, immediately intense, brushstrokes. The work exhibited in Lugano conveys the strength and dynamism that define Disler's pictorial style. Realised in the second half of the 1980s, the triptych is situated on the border between abstraction and figuration, marking an important phase of his pictorial production. The almost-obsessive repetition of the same motif, along with the attempt to impress a feeling – nay, an inner turmoil- onto the three canvasses, are both symptom and mirror of the Swiss artist's life itself.
Martin Disler lived in New York, Zürich, Amsterdam, Lugano, and Les Planchettes, in Neuchâtel Jura, where his last artist’s studio was.
Disler died at only 47, and he left behind a wide body of work comprising of sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints, poems, and other writings. The Buchmann Gallery is representing the estate of Martin Disler since 2013 in collaboration with his widow, Irene Grundel.
The artist made his debut with a personal exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel in 1980, where his works were exhibited again in 1993. In 1980 he was also at the Venice Biennale, in 1982 at documenta 7 in Kassel, at Kunsthaus Zürich in 1986, and, in 1992, at St.Gallen’s Kunstmuseum. In 1991 he was at Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburgh and at London’s Whitechapel Art Gallery. His work was included in group shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1981 and 1984, at Tate Gallery London in 1983, at Bern’s Kunstmuseum in 1987, and at Honk Kong Museum of Art in 1995.
Kunsthalle Bielefeld is currently showcasing a monographic exhibition entirely dedicated to the Swiss artist, open until July, 3 2016.
Prior to the opening in Lugano, it is also possible to visit the ongoing exhibition on Disler’s work in our Gallery’s spaces in Agra, which includes paintings on paper and canvas, and displays for the first time two glass paintings along terracotta and chalk sculptures.

Lo spazio cittadino Buchmann Lugano presenta venerdì 20 maggio alle ore 17.00 il trittico intitolato Ohne Titel, dell’artista Martin Disler (1949, Seewen-1996, Ginevra).
La produzione artistica di Disler rifugge ogni categorizzazione conservando ancora oggi una propria autonomia. Nei suoi dipinti l’impulso creativo si libera prepotentemente per concretizzarsi nelle pennellate decise e di immediata intensità. L’opera esposta a Lugano esprime la forza e il dinamismo tipici dello stile pittorico di Disler. Il trittico della seconda metà degli anni ‘80 si situa al limite tra astrazione e figurazione, segnando un’importante fase della sua produzione pittorica. La ripetitività quasi ossessiva dello stesso motivo e il tentativo di imprimere sulle tre tele un sentimento, o meglio un tormento interiore, sono sintomo e specchio della vita stessa dell’artista svizzero.
Martin Disler ha vissuto a New York, Zurigo, Amsterdam, Lugano e Les Planchettes, nel Giura neocastellano dove ha avuto il suo ultimo atelier. Scomparso a soli 47 anni, lascia alle sue spalle un vasto corpus di opere comprendente: sculture, dipinti, disegni, stampe, poesie e scritti. In collaborazione con la vedova Irene Grundel, da 3 anni la Galleria cura e rappresenta il lascito dell’artista svizzero.
L’artista ha esordito con una sua personale alla Kunsthalle di Basilea nel 1980, dove poi ha nuovamente esposto nel 1993, sempre nel 1980 ha esposto alla Biennale di Venezia, nel 1982 a documenta 7 a Kassel, alla Kunsthaus di Zurigo nel 1986 e nel 1992, al Kunstmuseum di St. Gallo nel 1990, al Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum di Duisburgo e alla Whitechapel Art Gallery di Londra nel 1991, e, all’interno di una mostra collettiva, presso il Museum of Modern Art di New York nel 1981 e nel 1984, alla Tate Gallery di Londra nel 1983, al Kunstmuseum di Berna nel 1987 e al Museum of Art di Hong Kong nel 1995.
La Kunsthalle di Bielefeld presenta attualmente una mostra monografica dedicata interamente all’artista svizzero visitabile fino al 3 luglio 2016.
Chi volesse ha la possibilità di visitare l’esposizione in corso negli spazi della Galleria ad Agra su Martin Disler con dipinti su carta, tela e per la prima volta in mostra due pitture su vetro, sculture in terracotta e gesso, prima dell’inaugurazione a Lugano.
