Luciano Rigolini Landscape
Saturday August 29th, from 5:00 PM, Buchmann Lugano Gallery will host the exhibition Landscape, dedicated to the artist-photographer Luciano Rigolini (*1950, Tesserete).
From 1997, Luciano Rigolini decided to leave the camera working only through the appropriation and rereading of amateur images and industrial documents. According to the artist, these images are taken without any artistic pretension and they are considered “peripheral” in relation to the history of photography.
The appropriation of existing photographic documents, their elaboration and the transposition in an artistic context requires a deep attention and a specific knowledge of the art history as well as of the photographic medium.
The research of images, apparently common, made by people who have not invested either affectively or artistically in their photographic gesture, allows the artist to investigate the specificity of the photographic medium and the aesthetic relationships and influences between photography and painting.
The artwork exhibited in Buchmann Lugano is a diptych titled Landscape. Rigolini took pictures of the Apollo 15 mission from the NASA archive, originally used to provide documentary evidence of the lunar ground. The artist processed the images creating a new figurative and independent vocabulary.
Rigolini produces a metamorphosis of the image giving a poetical and conceptual interpretation to scientific documentation placing them at another level as artworks.
The result is a sequence (and the reference to cinema it is no coincidence) hanging in the balance between reality and abstraction where through the evocative power of forms and structures the artist reveals the subconscious of the image itself.
From Seventies Rigolini works as cameraman, director and documentary filmmaker for the Swiss television in Lugano and Geneva. Graduated in the ‘80s at the University of Paris VIII in the Cinema Department, he received starting from the following decade international rewards. In parallel with his artistic activity, he has also worked since 1995 as a producer for the European cultural television channel ARTE in Paris, where he is in charge of creative and art house films, researching new forms of narrative. He teaches in several Universities in Europe and USA. He had, among others, exhibitions at the Museo Cantonale of Lugano (1992, 2007, 2012 and 2014), the Kunsthaus of Zurich (1997), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1997), the Fotostiftung Schweiz Winterthur (2008), at the Spazio Officina in Chiasso (2011), the Centre Culturel Suisse of Paris (2012) and the Musée de l’Elysée de Lausanne (2012). Currently he is working also in the publication of artist’s books known internationally.

Lo spazio cittadino Buchmann Lugano inaugura sabato 29 agosto a partire dalle ore 17.00 l’esposizione intitolata Landscape, dedicata al fotografo artista Luciano Rigolini (*1950, Tesserete).
A partire dal 1997 Luciano Rigolini decide di abbandonare la macchina fotografica per lavorare esclusivamente attraverso l’appropriazione e la rilettura di immagini amatoriali e documenti industriali; immagini scattate senza alcuna pretesa artistica e considerate dal fotografo stesso “periferiche” rispetto alla storia della fotografia. L’atto di appropriazione di documenti fotografici esistenti e la rielaborazione e trasmutazione in un contesto artistico, esige particolare cura e attenzione, così come una specifica e approfondita conoscenza della storia dell’arte e della storia del medium fotografico stesso. La ricerca di immagini apparentemente banali, scattate da persone che non hanno investito né affettivamente, né artisticamente nel loro gesto fotografico, permette all’artista di indagare la specificità del medium e i rapporti intrinseci ed estetici e le contaminazioni tra fotografia e pittura.
L’opera esposta a Lugano è un dittico intitolato Landscape; Rigolini ha recuperato fotografie della missione Apollo 15 dagli archivi della NASA destinate a documentare topograficamente il suolo lunare, e le ha in seguito modificate e codificate elaborando un vocabolario visivo autonomo. L’artista crea una metamorfosi dell’immagine e conferisce una lettura poetica e concettuale elevando a status di opera d’arte immagini nate come pura documentazione scientifica. Ciò che ne risulta è una sequenza, (e il riferimento al cinema non è casuale), in tensione tra realtà e astrazione, dove per mezzo della forza evocativa delle forme e strutture si cerca di rivelare l’inconscio dell’immagine stessa.
Dagli inizi degli anni ’70 lavora come cameraman, regista e documentarista alla Televisione svizzera a Lugano e Ginevra. Diplomato negli anni ’80 a Parigi presso il Dipartimento di Cinema dell’Università Paris VIII, ottiene a partire dal decennio successivo riconoscimenti in ambito internazionale. Dal 1995 alterna l’attività di artista fotografo a quella di produttore presso la televisione culturale europea ARTE a Parigi, responsabile del documentario d’autore, impegnato nella ricerca di nuove forme narrative. Insegna inoltre in diverse università in Europa e negli USA.
Ha esposto tra gli altri presso il Museo Cantonale d’Arte Lugano (1992, 2007, 2012 e 2014), Kunsthaus Zurigo (1997), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1997), Fotostiftung Schweiz Winterthur (2008), Spazio Officina Chiasso (2011), Centre Culturel Suisse Parigi (2012) e al Musée de l’Elysée Losanna (2012). Attualmente il suo lavoro si esprime anche nella pubblicazione di libri d’artista riconosciuti a livello internazionale.
