Joel Sternfeld Landscape?

1—30 Oct 2013
Buchmann Lugano
Press release

After the exhibit of Zaha Hadid’s painting, on 1 October Buchmann Lugano will open a show of  the American photographer Joel Sternfeld’s (*1944, New York) work A Private Aqueduct Leading from the Claudian Aqueduct to the Villa Sette Bassi, Roma Vecchia, Rome January 1991. The photograph, from the Campagna Romana series begun in the 1990s, is related to the exhibition Landscape?, currently at the Buchmann Gallery in Agra.

The ancient ruins of Roman civilization, which were a favourite subject of artists and writers in the seventeenth century, merge with and vanish into the landscape portrayed. Moreover, the work conceals a contrast between what was once a symbol of prosperity and innovation, and the reality of the outskirts of today’s Rome. However, the photographer’s classic poetics also comes through in a more subtle way, and with great skill Joel Sternfeld gives us a complex image fraught with references to the past that at the same time leave each individual viewer’s imagination free to contemplate it.

It is our great pleasure to invite you to not only the exhibit at Buchmann Lugano to discover this fascinating work by one of the great masters of colour photography, but also to visit the exhibition Landscape?, which is currently at Buchmann Gallery in Agra.

Comunicato stampa

New York),A private aqueduct leading from the Claudian Aqueduct to the Villa Sette Bassi, Roma Vecchia, Rome January 1991.
